Hong Kong In reaction to the United States’ recent move to implement an extra 10% tariff on goods from Hong Kong, a representative for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government announced today they plan to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The representative remarked, “The U.S. actions are fundamentally at odds with WTO regulations and overlook our recognition as a distinct customs territory as stated in Article 116 of the Basic Law and acknowledged by the WTO. The HKSAR Government will commence formal proceedings under the WTO Dispute Settlement Mechanism to challenge these unjust measures and safeguard our rightful interests.”
The representative highlighted Hong Kong’s dedication to a rules-based multilateral trading framework, firmly opposing the U.S. actions and urging the U.S. to promptly amend what it views as an erroneous decision.
