Beatrice Ekweremadu Returns To Nigeria After Serving Jail Term in The UK.

Beatrice Ekweremadu, the spouse of former Deputy Senate President Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has made her way back to Nigeria, according to Vanguard. In May 2023, a UK court sentenced Senator Ekweremadu, his wife, and Dr. Obinna Obeta due to charges linked to organ trafficking. She landed in Abuja today, January 22.

It’s worth recalling that on March 23, the court determined that Ekweremadu, Beatrice, and their medical associate, Obinna Obeta, were guilty of smuggling a trader from Nigeria to the UK to harvest his organ, a violation under the United Kingdom Modern Slavery Act of 2015. The jury concluded that they had plotted to bring the 21-year-old to London to exploit him for his kidney.

This ruling marked a precedent as the first of its type under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act of 2015.

Ike Ekweremadu received a 10-year prison term, while Beatrice was handed a six-year sentence, despite mentioning health issues during the trial. Dr. Obinna Obeta, who assisted the couple in the organ harvesting scheme, was also sentenced to 10 years in prison.
