Gonorrhea

This is a sexually transmitted disease (STD). it’s highly infectious. It travels through the blood stream causing joint pain, and sometimes lodges in the heart causing (endocarditis)and in the spinal column (meningitis).

The bacterium’s incubation period is 2 -14 days with symptoms appearing between 4 – 6 days of infection. It’s spread through sex , and ejaculation does not have to occur before its passed on to your partner.

MODE OF TRANSMISSION

It can be transmitted through any form of sexual contact below;

  • Vaginal sex
  • Anal sex
  • Oral sex ( both giving & receiving).

WHO IS AT RISK?

  • The young
  • Those who have sex with untested new partners
  • Those with multiple sex partner
  • One with previous history of the infection.
  • One with other STD’s
  • One who has sex with men
  • Sexually active women .

COMPLICATIONS THAT OCCOUR WHEN YOU DO NOT TREAT .

  • infertility
  • Neonatal /adult blindness
  • Perihepatitis
  • Inflammation of the epididymis
  • Inflammation of the prostate gland
  • Inflammation of the urethral stricture.

PREVENTION OF GONORRHEA

  • Use of condom – avoid spermicides
  • Get your sexual partner tested
  • Avoid sex with anyone with likely symptoms of the infection
  • Regular screening.

QUICK FACTS ABOUT GONORRHEA

  • The bacteria cannot live more than a few seconds outside the body. Thus its not transferrable via touching of objects such as toilet seat,or clothes of the Infected.
  • Anyone that tests positive for it,should be tested for other STD’s such as chlamydia,HIV, syphillis.
  • It can only be passed from mother to child during vaginal delivery. Babies born with c-section cannot get it from their mother.
