Nigeria @ 64 : Independence or Funeral Mass ??

In as much as we  always try to stay hopeful, positive and optimistic in the midst of the current economic and political challenges battling our dear country. I’m forced to ask and i believe all Nigerians out there are asking the same question, “what exactly are we celebrating or independent from?” If Nigeria is likened to a business establishment, it can be called or termed a failed business.

Nigerians have always had high hopes and expectations that Nigeria will be great right from the very day we gained independence. But with each passing independence day the reality of every Nigerian has changed as the country keeps deteriorating in all sectors killing the hope and dreams of all Nigerians. Nigerians can’t point to any sector of their country that’s vibrant, buoyant and solid, we can’t boast of anything. It’s so disheartening that the 64th Independence Day celebration of “the Giant of Africa” is so gloomy like a funeral mass.

The Giant of Africa is drowning in debts, insecurity, corruption, tribal, religious, and social issues. The Giant of Africa at age 64 is still struggling to generate, distribute and sustain power. Her healthcare and education system/sector is a sad commentary in and of itself. The list of her woes is endless.

If we are to change this sad narrative, it’s time for all Nigerians to rise up and break free from religious and tribal differences that has been stopping us from working together to achieve a better Country. Though the leaders are to be held accountable to a large extent we shouldn’t forget that they were elected from the citizenry. We can’t fault the elected without faulting the electors as well. All hands must be on deck to put Nigeria back on course, nothing good comes easy and it will be very tough. But we all shouldn’t forget that “without sacrifice there will be no victory”.

Today should be a time for all Nigerians to sit down and think hard on our individual lives and the state of the country. We all should make a decision today towards the betterment of this country. If we fail to do so now, in a couple of years from now our beloved country may not longer be in existence. The Giant of africa may become a sad tale told to future generations about a child that was birthed with high expectations that grew up to be a failure and a disappointment. A cautionary tale for other countries to learn from.

We have to strive towards sustainable development, not just for the current generation but the ones unborn. Now is not the time to play the blame game, it has never yielded results. Now is the time to dust ourselves and put in the work to resuscitate our country.
