In an effort to enhance female representation within Nigeria’s legislative framework, Senator Remi Tinubu has introduced a bill aimed at establishing designated seats for women in the National Assembly (NASS).
As reported, the former First Lady of Lagos State and current Senator representing the Lagos Central Senatorial District made this announcement at a recent gathering hosted by the Nigerian Women’s Trust Fund. “It is crucial that we cease offering mere platitudes regarding women’s involvement in politics,” Tinubu remarked.
Currently, Nigeria stands at 184th out of 192 nations concerning women’s representation in parliament, with females holding only about 4% of the National Assembly’s seats. This statistic places Nigeria significantly below the global norm of 26.1% representation of women in national legislatures.
Tinubu’s proposed legislation seeks to allocate a specific number of positions for women in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. “We must implement affirmative action to ensure a certain percentage of seats are reserved for women in the National Assembly,” she emphasized.
The senator contended that enhancing women’s political engagement is vital for promoting gender equality and sustainable development throughout Nigeria. “When you strengthen a woman, you strengthen a nation,” Tinubu stated, reflecting a commonly cited African proverb.
