Actress Kate Henshaw has expressed her apprehensions regarding surrogacy, highlighting the potential for exploiting women who are financially disadvantaged in this arrangement.
During a conversation on News Central, Henshaw stressed the necessity for strong laws and regulations to safeguard the rights and welfare of surrogates.
She pointed out that surrogacy ought to be approached with caution, taking into account the emotional and physical dangers involved.
She advocated for stricter regulations in Nigeria to oversee surrogacy agreements, emphasizing the importance of the health and safety of everyone involved.
Henshaw remarked;
“Surrogacy can be a means to take advantage of individuals who lack financial stability, as you simply compensate them for carrying a child for you. But then what, what obligation do you have to care for them? Are there any laws or legal structures ensuring they receive adequate support before and after they give birth for you?
“What kind of agreements are made? There’s so much to consider. Surrogacy is about providing hope to those unable to conceive or who face medical issues and wish to have a child.
“It shouldn’t be regarded lightly; there are numerous emotions linked to carrying a child, beyond just bodily changes. There are psychological shifts. Women can suffer tremendously, or worse. It shouldn’t be something taken lightly.
“I hope Nigeria advances in this regard. I hope we establish laws that are effective and not merely suggestions, as you often mention.”
