Diogo Jota and his sibling André Silva tragically lost their lives in a vehicle collision in Spain last week. As a result, Liverpool will forever retire his jersey number 20, marking a first in the club’s 133-year legacy.
“It was essential for us to include Diogo’s wife Rute and his family in the choice,” states Michael Edwards, CEO of the club’s owners Fenway Sports Group, in a statement.
He goes on to say:
“This is a singular homage to a remarkable and incredible individual. He will perpetually be our number 20.”
Diogo Jota will also receive recognition in conjunction with Liverpool’s preseason match against Preston on Sunday.
