Can Kabila Avoid The Death Penalty In Congo

Prosecutors in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are seeking the ultimate punishment for former president Joseph Kabila, who faces charges of war crimes, homicide, and sexual violence.

Kabila ruled the nation for nearly two decades before losing the election in 2019. In the time following his presidency, revelations have surfaced regarding potential connections to the Rwanda-supported M23 group.

This militia is alleged to have committed numerous grave offenses in Congo-Kinshasa recently, including a massacre predominantly involving Hutus this past summer.

Kabila is absent from the courtroom, and his current whereabouts remain uncertain. His backers contend that the proceedings are driven by political agendas.

No timeline has been set for the decision.
