Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris will no longer enjoy Secret Service protection following President Donald Trump’s cancellation of an extension granted by former President Joe Biden, as indicated in a letter examined by CNN.
The correspondence, dubbed “Memorandum for the Secretary of Homeland Security” and dated Thursday, declares: “You are hereby authorized to cease any security-related measures previously sanctioned by Executive Memorandum, beyond those mandated by law, for the following person, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”
According to federal law, former vice presidents are entitled to six months of protection after vacating office, a duration that concluded for Harris on July 21. Biden had prolonged her coverage for another year via a directive that was not disclosed earlier.
Harris, who is preparing for a multi-city book tour promoting her memoir “107 Days,” will lose not only the agents designated to safeguard her personally but also continuous threat intelligence, including evaluations of in-person situations, emails, texts, and social media, as per sources familiar with her security arrangements. Her residence in Los Angeles will also no longer receive federal protection.
“The Vice President expresses gratitude to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and steadfast commitment to safety,” stated Kirsten Allen, a senior advisor to Harris.
Harris’ spouse, Doug Emhoff, ceased to have his personal details protected on July 21 under standard provisions applicable to the spouse of a former vice president.

California Governor Gavin Newsom was informed of this change late Thursday. Bob Salladay, Newsom’s spokesperson, criticized the decision, proclaiming, “The safety of our public officials should never be exposed to erratic, vindictive political impulses.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also condemned the choice, describing it as “yet another act of revenge following a long sequence of political retribution reflected in firings, the revocation of security clearances, and more. This places the former Vice President in jeopardy, and I am eager to collaborate with the Governor to ensure Vice President Harris’s safety in Los Angeles.”
The White House and Secret Service did not promptly respond to CNN’s inquiries for commentary. Trump’s withdrawal occurs amidst increased public visibility for Harris, marking her initial extended public engagements since exiting office. This situation raises concerns regarding the costs and logistics associated with providing alternative private security, which could soar into millions of dollars annually.
