On Wednesday, a minor uproar unfolded at the National Assembly as several officials from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exited a session with the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies.
The lawmakers had summoned JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, to deliver certain documents to the committee. However, Oloyede was absent that day and was represented by Board Director Mufutau Bello, who arrived at the National Assembly complex alongside other JAMB representatives.
The situation escalated when Bello insisted that no journalists could be present during his presentation, claiming that the materials he was set to reveal contained confidential information. This request was firmly rejected by the committee members, who maintained that the meeting was public and that the JAMB representative could not dictate their proceedings. In light of the disagreement, the frustrated JAMB official abruptly commanded his team to exit the meeting, leaving the lawmakers taken aback.
In reaction, the legislators instructed the Sergeant-at-Arms to detain the JAMB officials, but by the time the order was given, they had already departed the premises. Following this incident, the Committee has now issued a deadline of next Tuesday for JAMB to ensure the Registrar’s personal appearance and the presentation of all required documents.
The Committee further noted that failure to comply with this deadline could lead to a warrant for the officials’ arrest.
