Stop using Hausa and Muslim identities as Props in Crime-related Skits – TikToker

A Muslim woman has taken issue with certain Nigerian content creators for what she perceives as a troubling trend that is perilous, unjust, and detrimental to an entire community.

She asserts that the frequent incorporation of the Hausa language, hijabs, jalabias, turbans, and Islamic symbolism in skits to depict bandits or criminals is not “content” — it constitutes profiling, and it bears real-life repercussions. She cautioned that many individuals worldwide who lack insight into Nigeria may mistakenly assume that every Hausa speaker, every Northerner, and every Muslim is linked to crime — a stereotype she characterizes as damaging and irresponsible.

Moreover, she highlighted that Northern Nigerians already contend with unjust labels such as “illiterate” or “backward,” and content creators are now “rubbing salt in their wounds” by mocking an entire culture and faith.

Her message was clear:

Criminals possess no tribe, no faith, no language — bandits and kidnappers do not represent a culture. They are merely criminals.

She called on creators to refrain from using Hausa and Muslim identities as props in crime-related skits, emphasizing that it jeopardizes innocent individuals, influences their treatment abroad, and exacerbates bias in professional settings and daily life.
