Iran Raises Alarm Over Player Safety
President of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, confirmed that the country is unwilling to send its national team to the United States under current conditions.
According to Taj, Iran is already in negotiations with FIFA to have its matches played in Mexico instead, where officials believe security risks would be lower.
“We will not put our players at risk. Discussions are ongoing to ensure Iran’s matches are held in a safer location,” Taj stated.
Trump’s Statement Fuels Uncertainty
Tensions escalated further after comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested that Iran’s participation in the tournament might not be advisable due to safety concerns.
In a post shared on Truth Social, Trump said Iran would be allowed to compete but questioned whether it was appropriate given the current situation.
These remarks have intensified debate over the team’s participation and added pressure on FIFA to respond.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature an expanded 48-team format for the first time.
