Bill To Remove Immunity of 9ja Governors and Vice -President Passes 2nd Reading

The House of Representatives has successfully passed a bill for its second reading aimed at rescinding the immunity presently held by the vice-president and governors in Nigeria.

This bill achieved its second reading on Wednesday within the House of Representatives.



The legislation aims to eliminate the immunity granted to the vice president, governors, and their deputies with the goal of curbing corruption, eradicating impunity, and improving accountability in public service.

This development comes after 39 constitutional amendment bills that progressed through their second reading in the green chamber on Tuesday.

Noteworthy proposals that also advanced to second reading on Wednesday include:

A Bill for an Act to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to limit the immunity afforded to the president, abolish the immunity given to the vice president, governors, and their deputies, with intentions of reducing corruption, eliminating impunity, and enhancing accountability in public office.

A Bill for an Act to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to separate the roles of the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Attorney-General of a state from the positions of the Minister of Justice of the Federal Government and the Commissioner for Justice of a state.

A Bill for an Act to modify the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to confer citizenship rights to spouses of Nigerian women, and delineate the minimum number of youths and women eligible for appointment to specific positions.

Additional bills include proposals for the establishment of Ijebu State, Ife-Ijesa State, Tiga State, Orlu State, and Etiti State.

These bills did not undergo debate, bringing the total number passed through second reading to 81.
