FG Gives Clear Explanation On The New Ongoing Road Projects.

The Federal Government has provided clarification on the ongoing six-lane Lagos-Badagry Road project concerning the proposed Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, addressed this matter.

Kesha stated that the Nigerian segment of the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway Development Project spans 79 kilometers, beginning at Eric Moore in Lagos State and concluding at the Seme Border. ‘That road measures approximately 79km from Eric Moore to Nigeria’s border at Seme,’ Kesha noted.

She emphasized that the Lagos-Badagry Expressway is a portion of the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway.

‘The current undertakings on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway are initiatives of the Federal Government of Nigeria. For clarity, that stretch is roughly 79 kilometers from Eric Moore.’

Kesha added that the entire Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway extends for 1,028 kilometers.

The federal controller reported that a 46.2 km segment of the Nigerian section of the highway development – from Agbara to Seme – has been contracted out by the Federal Government.

She mentioned that the section from Okokomaiko to Agbara is being supervised by the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency.

Furthermore, she indicated that the 10 km stretch from Eric Moore to Igbo Elerin is being managed by the Lagos State Government.

Kesha acknowledged that the initial vision for the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway was a unified 10-lane roadway with accommodations for train and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems.

She remarked, ‘I cannot say whether that plan is still in effect as it seems they are reassessing and instructing each member country to manage its own part.’

‘What we are currently executing may endure. There may just be an extension, since what we are implementing now consists of three lanes with no service lanes.’

‘Provisions for service lanes might be added, along with accommodations for light rail and BRT corridors so that residents of the communities along this route have the opportunity to embark and disembark using designated corridors for light rail and BRT.’

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced its intention to reassess the recently published 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scores. This decision was prompted by a surge of grievances regarding low marks.

She noted that light rail and BRT corridors could potentially be integrated to benefit communities situated along the route.

Kesha informed NAN that the right of way for the planned highway is approximately 120 meters.

She revealed that the highway project remains in its design phase.

NAN reports that this design phase is projected to conclude in May, after which construction will commence.

NAN recalls that in March, the Federal Ministry of Works conducted a stakeholder engagement with the military, police, paramilitary forces, and border communities concerning the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway Development Project from the ECOWAS Commission at Seme Border.

The engagement started at Agbara, where royal leaders, youth, community representatives, and others interacted with officials from the ECOWAS Commission and the Federal Ministry of Works.
