FG’s New Plan: Free C-Sections for All Women

The Nigerian government has unveiled  a commendable health care initiative to offer C-sections at No cost to women nationwide.

This move is a bid to reinforce their dedication to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rate, which rank among the highest globally.

Health Minister Ali Pate announced this initiative in Abuja during the unveiling of the Maternal Mortality Reduction Initiative (MAMII) at the Joint Annual Review (JAR) of the Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) in health. This initiative is aimed at enhancing maternal and newborn health, with a special focus on improving access to essential healthcare, particularly in marginalized communities.

“This is part of our ongoing efforts to minimize maternal mortality in the country,” Pate remarked. “No woman should perish simply due to the unaffordability of a C-section.”

The policy seeks to eliminate financial obstacles for women requiring C-sections, whether in response to urgent complications or scheduled deliveries. It is intended to bolster primary healthcare and encourage community involvement in maternal health.

The initiative has garnered backing from the World Health Organization (WHO), with WHO’s Nigeria Country Representative, Walter Mulombo, underscoring the necessity for effective execution. “If implemented correctly, this initiative will succeed. We are here to assist at every stage,” Mulombo affirmed.

During the occasion, Pate also urged Nigerians to hold the government accountable for ensuring accessible and high-quality healthcare, in alignment with President Tinubu’s commitment to healthcare reform.
