Is Giving Birth in the U.S Still Possible for Nigerians

The U.S Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria has released a significant alert for Nigerians.

The US cautioned that any Nigerian intending to journey to the US mainly to give birth and obtain American citizenship for their offspring will face rejection.

In a communication on platform X, the US Mission declared that utilizing a visa primarily for childbirth is prohibited by US immigration regulations.

“Utilizing your visa to enter for the main purpose of delivering a baby in the United States to ensure your child gains U.S. citizenship is not allowed. Consular officials will reject your visa request if they suspect this is your goal,” the US Mission stated.

This alert follows increasing examination of visa applications and intensified enforcement regarding what is colloquially known as ‘birth tourism’, the act of traveling to the US to give birth so that the child receives automatic citizenship.

Remember that the United States Department of State has also updated its visa reciprocity policy, revealing that most non-immigrant, non-diplomatic visas issued to Nigerian nationals will now be limited to single-entry with a validity period of three months.

The US reinforced that its visa regulations are grounded in worldwide technical and security standards aimed at safeguarding the integrity of its immigration systems.
