Kenya Pushes for Repatriation of Citizens Recruited into Russian Military

Kenya has stepped up diplomatic efforts to secure the return of its citizens who were recruited into the Russian military amid the ongoing Russia–Ukraine War.

The country’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Minister, Musalia Mudavadi, has travelled to Moscow to hold talks with Russian authorities on the issue.

Reports indicate that dozens of Kenyans have joined Russian forces, with some allegedly losing their lives in the conflict while others remain stranded in Russia, unable to return home.

Kenya Intensifies Diplomatic Efforts

According to a statement from Mudavadi’s office, the visit aims to address concerns surrounding the recruitment of Kenyan citizens into the Russian military.

The Kenyan government plans to discuss both voluntary and involuntary recruitment cases, especially those linked to misleading job offers that eventually led individuals into military service.

Officials said the talks will focus on diplomatic engagement with Russian authorities to reduce the risks associated with deceptive recruitment schemes.

The government also wants to ensure that Kenyan citizens living or working abroad are protected and treated with dignity.

Government Seeks Safe Return of Stranded Kenyans

One of the main goals of the diplomatic mission is to secure the safe repatriation of Kenyans currently trapped in Russia.

Authorities in Kenya say the discussions will involve a coordinated government approach to safeguard the welfare of citizens abroad and prevent similar incidents in the future.

The government emphasized that Kenyans seeking employment overseas should be guaranteed safe working conditions and proper legal protections.

Kenya and Russia Exploring Stronger Economic Ties

Beyond addressing the recruitment issue, the visit is also expected to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Kenya and Russia.

The Kenyan government highlighted Russia’s support through educational scholarships and fertilizer assistance, which have contributed to improvements in the country’s education and agricultural sectors.

Officials believe there is also significant potential for increased trade.

Kenya is looking to expand exports of key agricultural products such as coffee, tea, and floriculture to the Russian market, especially as shifting global conditions create new trade opportunities.

Areas of Future Cooperation

Mudavadi’s discussions with Russian officials are also expected to explore collaboration in several sectors, including:

  • Education
  • Labour mobility
  • Healthcare
  • Infrastructure development
  • Energy partnerships

These areas are considered crucial for strengthening long-term diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries.

A Key Diplomatic Mission

The Kenyan government described the trip as a critical diplomatic move that combines the protection of its citizens with efforts to expand international partnerships.

By engaging directly with Russian authorities, Nairobi hopes to secure the safe return of its nationals while building stronger cooperation with Russia in trade, education, and development.
