LAWMA – Lagos Waste Management Authority have reportedly made conclusions to shut down Ladipo and Oyingbo Market indefinitely over reckless waste dumping, refusal to pay for services, & general poor waste management.
Ibrahim Odumboni MD/CEO in a statement on Thursday said the markets would be shut from September 22, as he condemned the poor and unhygienic environmental practices by traders in disregard of constant warnings.
The official said in a statement that ;
Despite abatement notices, the marketers have continued “the mindless environmental violation”.
“We are left with no other choice than to evoke the necessary sanction of shutting down the markets.
“This is also meant to serve as a deterrent to other nonchalant markets”, Odumboni added.
The MD said his agency under the directive of The Lagos State Government would ensure that business activities in all Lagos markets were carried out in a clean and safe environment.
He further noted that the agency had been deploying trucks to clear black spots across the metropolis, while using the opportunity to lament on how some factions are sabotaging government efforts by dumping waste by the roads to avoid paying for services.
He advised traders in other locations to adhere strictly to environmental hygiene or risk indefinite closure of their markets.
