Dele Momodu, part of the opposition alliance, has labeled the 2027 presidential election as an ethnic rivalry. He asserted that the opposition’s support can exclusively arise from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Aminu Tambuwal, Nasir El-Rufai, and Kano Emir Mohammed Sanusi.
He remarked that elections are fundamentally a numbers game, and as a proponent of democracy, he welcomes healthy electoral rivalry. In a post on 𝕏, Momodu emphasized that efforts to morph Nigeria into a one-party system should be actively opposed.
He stated, “The 2027 Presidential election has clearly and overtly become an ethnic competition, and opposition votes can solely originate from the alternative camp represented by Atiku, Kwankwaso, Tambuwal, El-Rufai, and even Emir Sanusi (should he choose to transition from royalty to political life).”
Moreover, Southern candidates must not be excluded as long as they are prepared to enter a primary, since popularity can be gauged only through contests or consensus among the major opposition factions. “All necessary steps must be taken to prevent the emergence of a one-party state or a monarchical regime.”
Dele Momodu additionally called for opposition parties to come together and strategically utilize what he referred to as the “ethnic and religious cards” if they plan to take on President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential race.
He remarked that the recent wave of defections from PDP governors, including Peter Mbah of Enugu and Douye Diri of Bayelsa, has further tightened the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)’s hold. As per his analysis, the APC now holds dominance over both the executive and legislative branches, pushing Nigeria perilously close to becoming a one-party state.
