The Federal government of nigeria has given a condition that must be met, before it will consider lifting the indefinite suspension of Twitter operations in the country.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, who made mention of the issue during a meeting with foreign envoys in Abuja today June 7 said the micro-blogging site will be restored in Nigeria only if the platform can be used maturely and “responsibly”.
Although there is no definite timeline for when it will be restored, the micro-blogging site was suspended so as to halt it’s misuse , since many have converted it into a platform for destabilisation and facilitation of criminality.
His statement :-
The condition would be responsible use of the social media and that really has to be it.
We are not saying that Twitter is threatening the country or any such thing. Why we have taken this measure is to stop them to be used as platforms for destabilisation and facilitation of criminality or encouragement of criminalities” he saidWe want to use social media for good. Differences of opinion is not a problem; everybody will not think alike.
But lives matter; Nigerian lives matter and we have to do everything we can to preserve Nigerian lives. And when we feel our goals are threatened, actions need to be taken.”he said
