The National Examinations Council (NECO) has declared a major transformation in its examination structure, announcing the discontinuation of the conventional paper-and-pencil approach in favor of a fully integrated computer-based examination (CBE) system starting with the November/December 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External.
This initiative is in accordance with the Federal Government’s order, issued in July, which directs that all national assessments, including WAEC and NECO, shift to computer-based testing by 2026.
In its announcement, NECO stated that it has finalized plans for this transition and has issued detailed protocols for Computer-Based Examination (CBE) centers, detailing system requirements, venue specifications, staff qualifications, and security measures.
The examination body mentioned that its implementation of CBT for the November/December SSCE External is a trial phase leading up to a complete rollout for all assessments in 2026.
