Finnish officials have revealed that pro-Biafra activist Simon Ekpa is scheduled to stand trial in May 2025 on allegations of purported terrorist activities.
Ekpa, a citizen of both Nigeria and Finland and the head of the Autopilot faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was apprehended on November 21, 2024, along with four accomplices in Finland.
The Finnish authorities charge Ekpa with terrorism financing, instigating public crimes with terrorist motives, and breaching the nation’s Money Collection Law. Investigations indicate these actions occurred between August 2021 and November 2024 in Lahti, Finland. Authorities assert that Ekpa’s conduct has fueled violence and crimes against civilians in southeastern Nigeria.
The Päijät-Häme District Court has mandated Ekpa’s detention on probable grounds awaiting trial. Finnish officials announced that prosecutors have until May 2025 to file formal charges. Senior Detective Superintendent Mikko Laaksonen confirmed ongoing global collaboration in the case, although specific details are yet to be revealed due to the sensitive nature of the probe.
Ekpa has been associated with instability in southeastern Nigeria, where he has issued contentious sit-at-home directives often enforced through violence. The Nigerian government claims that his actions have resulted in civilian fatalities and significant disruption in the area. Ekpa has additionally utilized social media to advocate for separatist agendas, solicit donations, and assert responsibility for attacks in Nigeria.
Attempts by the Nigerian government to extradite Simon Ekpa for legal proceedings have not been fruitful. In February 2023, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Finnish ambassador, conveying concerns about Ekpa’s threats to disrupt Nigeria’s electoral process. While Finnish officials acknowledged the circumstances, they underscored their commitment to Finnish law, citing Ekpa’s rights as a citizen.
