Babatunde Fashola, the former Governor of Lagos State, has urged Nigerian youth to remain in the country and seek leadership opportunities rather than pursuing prospects abroad, despite the prevailing economic challenges in Nigeria.
Speaking at the 8th and 9th convocation ceremonies of Elizade University in Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, Fashola emphasized the importance of resilience and dedication to the nation.
In recent years, a growing number of young Nigerians have opted to emigrate in search of better opportunities, a phenomenon commonly referred to as “Japa.”
Nevertheless, Fashola encouraged the youth to stay and contribute meaningfully to their homeland. He posed rhetorical questions, asking, “Why did Mrs. Folorunso Alakija not leave? Why did Chief Tunde Afolabi, who has made significant contributions to Nigeria, choose to stay? Why are they still here?”
Fashola referenced several accomplished Nigerians who have remained in the country despite challenges, asserting that “leaders do not abandon their posts even in difficult times.”
Babatunde Fashola called upon graduates to accept the responsibilities associated with leadership, remarking, “There were challenging periods when Chief Ade-Ojo was at the University of Nigeria, yet Ade-Ojo did not depart. Had he left, Elizade University would not exist today.”
Michael Ade-Ojo, the founder of Elizade University, also expressed his pride in the institution’s mission to address the educational needs of the nation by producing competent graduates.
“My vision has always been to offer world-class education right here in Nigeria,” Ade-Ojo stated, expressing satisfaction with the university’s achievements.
