The government of Anambra State has halted the deployment of solar-powered street lights within the urban area of Awka, a venture projected to cost the state upwards of N1 billion.
This resolution was reached during the 35th meeting of the Anambra State Executive Council, convened at the Government House in Awka.
In last week’s session, three firms were identified as having received the contract, which was anticipated to be finalized within a three-month timeframe. However, following thorough discussions, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, disclosed that the council deemed the unit price of the initiative to be excessively high and concluded that it needed to be adjusted.
“The council rigorously examined the proposal for the installation of the solar-powered street lights and agreed that the unit price was inflated and required a reduction,” Mefor noted.
It was also indicated that the proposal will be slated for re-presentation at the forthcoming Executive Council gathering, where all project specifications will be provided. “This action is a wise choice to guarantee the project’s implementation at a fair cost,” the council asserted.
Moreover, the Executive Council clarified that the earlier announcement regarding the awarding of the street light project was an error. “The government regrets the blunder. The public will be informed about the project’s progress once a resolution is reached,” the statement concluded.
