Why Is Trump Focused On Making Sanctions Stricter Now

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has instructed government officials to assess how the nation’s sanctions on Cuba can be intensified in the near term, as indicated in a memo that the AP news agency has obtained.

Among other objectives, the President aims to discover methods to “halt all tourism” to the island and restrict educational trips to those arranged solely by American citizens.

Former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden have both relaxed American sanctions against the island, a stance that Donald Trump has consistently opposed.

Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez condemns the memo’s contents, asserting that it “punishes” the Cuban populace.

“This constitutes criminal activity that infringes upon the human rights of an entire nation,” he states on X.

Officials now have 30 days to devise strategies for tightening the existing sanctions.
