Ecuador’s Ex-Vice President Jorge Glas Get a 13-Year Prison Sentence

On Monday, Ecuador’s former vice president, Jorge Glas, was sentenced to 13 years behind bars for corruption. He is found guilty of misusing public funds in connection with the reconstruction efforts following an earthquake.

Glas was apprehended last year under dramatic circumstances when Ecuadorian authorities raided Mexico’s embassy in the capital, Quito, where the ex-vice president was seeking refuge. He had previously been convicted for his role in a corruption scandal linked to a Brazilian construction firm, leading him to request political asylum at the embassy.

This incursion faced intense international backlash, as the sanctity of embassies is guaranteed by the Vienna Convention.

Jorge Glas served as the vice president of the nation from 2013 to 2017.
