Proper Scrutinization Of Candidates Is Crucial – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the former Labour Party Presidential candidate during the 2023 general elections, has issued a caution to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. He urged INEC to authenticate the credentials submitted by candidates vying for public positions to avoid electing individuals with dubious backgrounds.

Obi expressed this concern in a message on his verified X account on Monday. He highlighted that numerous current public office holders are flaunting forged credentials supported by fraudulent affidavits, which were utilized in 2023, after they had “passed through” both INEC, security, and Senate screenings with fake documents.

The ex-governor of Anambra State emphasized the peril of normalizing criminal behavior, noting that he frequently faces attacks and blackmail from those involved in the misconduct whenever he voices concerns about Nigeria being a landscape of crime.

But how do you convey to people that those whose integrity, character, and conduct should be role models and emulated in society have become the very source of the nation’s deterioration?”How do you advise young Nigerians to act honestly and ethically when those they are meant to emulate are the least worthy of admiration because they are criminals and dishonest?”INEC, even after the elections, shows no interest in revisiting or investigating these grave offenses before the next election,” he stated.
