Military officials in Guinea-Bissau said on Wednesday that they have completely taken over the country. They stopped all election-related activities and closed the country’s borders right away.
This happened just three days after the nation held its legislative and presidential elections. The move came after reports of loud gunfire earlier in the day near the presidential palace in Bissau.
People who saw the events said soldiers in uniforms were moving to control the main road leading to the palace, which made things more tense in this politically unstable country in West Africa.

The announcement was made from the army’s main base in the capital. Senior soldiers read a statement there, confirming the takeover and explaining the steps they are taking to maintain control.
