Shocking Reports of Assault at Ozoro Festival Ignite Outcry

Reports of sexual assault and harassment against women during Ozoro festival in Delta State spark outrage. Authorities launch investigation as residents demand justice.

Outrage in Delta State as Women Reportedly Assaulted During Ozoro Kingdom Festival

Delta State has been rocked by disturbing reports of sexual assault and harassment targeting women in Ozoro Kingdom, the headquarters of Isoko North Local Government Area. According to multiple sources, young men allegedly raped, molested, and assaulted girls and women during a local festival on Thursday.

Traditionally, women are expected to remain indoors during certain hours of the celebration, but this year, no official guidance or warnings were issued by the kingdom’s leadership. Observers say this lack of communication may have contributed to the alleged attacks.

A youth involved in rescuing some victims expressed outrage and called on the Delta State government, local authorities, and security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are held accountable. Viral videos circulating on social media show groups of young men celebrating after forcibly stripping a woman naked, sparking widespread condemnation.

Residents have described the event as a so-called “raping festival,” creating fear among women and young girls. Reports indicate that women seen outside during the festival risked being assaulted. Sources allege multiple cases of molestation and rape, although authorities have yet to release a full official report.

Concerns for Students and Visitors At The Ozoro Festival

Particular concern has been raised for female students of Delta State University, Ozoro, and visitors unfamiliar with the festival’s alleged dangers. The Delta State Police Command confirmed the incident, with Public Relations Officer Edafe Bright describing it as “barbaric, unacceptable, and a gross violation of human rights.”

Commissioner of Police Aina Adesola has ordered an investigation into the incident. Edafe Bright emphasized:

“No custom or tradition is superior to the rights of citizens. Those responsible for this barbaric act will be arrested and brought to justice. We urge anyone with useful information to come forward.”

Local Government Response

Isoko North Local Government chairman Godwin Ogorugba condemned the assaults, describing them as “inhumane, barbaric, and totally unacceptable.” While denying that rape occurred, he confirmed that some individuals exploited the festival to harass women. Ogorugba added:

“This act is sacrilegious and shameful. Security agencies are scrutinizing videos to identify those responsible. No cultural or social activity justifies harassment or assault. All culprits will be brought to justice.”

Ogorugba reassured residents that the community remains peaceful and accommodating, but stressed that such acts would not be tolerated.

Delta State Government Reacts To Ozoro Festival Crimes

The Delta State Government also denounced the attacks, labeling them “barbaric and unacceptable.” State Commissioner for Works and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, said the government is deeply disturbed by reports of sexual harassment and assault during the Ozoro festival.

“Cultural celebrations must never be used as a cover for criminal activity. The government calls on police and security agencies to bring perpetrators to justice and urges festival organizers to ensure adequate safety measures for participants.”

The state reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights and safety of all residents, especially women and vulnerable groups.

Public Outcry and Next Steps

The incident at the Ozoro Festival has sparked outrage across social media and civil society, highlighting the urgent need for stricter festival safety protocols and community awareness. Authorities have promised a thorough investigation, and residents are being urged to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure justice is served.
