Former Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, declared on Saturday his intention to run for mayor of New York City.
In a video statement shared on his website, Cuomo presented a 17-minute appeal for his candidacy, gazing directly into the camera while visuals of New York City play in the background.
“We are well aware that our New York City is facing significant challenges today,” Cuomo states as the footage reveals scenes of homeless individuals on city streets and in the subway systems. “It’s evident in the vacant storefronts, the graffiti, the filth, the influx of migrants, and the sporadic violence. The city exudes a sense of danger, chaos, and crisis.”
Cuomo’s entry into the already packed race paves the way for a possible political resurgence for the former governor, who stepped down in 2021 due to a sexual harassment controversy after 11 women accused him of sexual misconduct.
Cuomo has consistently refuted the accusations, which were detailed in a report by the state attorney general at that time.
His candidacy also initiates a showdown between the ex-governor and the current New York City Mayor, Eric Adams, who is under renewed scrutiny and is facing calls to resign after the Trump-led Department of Justice instructed prosecutors to dismiss corruption charges against him.

Adams has denied any wrongdoing.
Since exiting office, Cuomo has mostly remained out of the public spotlight.
CNN previously reported that Cuomo and his team have been quietly preparing for a campaign for months, motivated by the controversies surrounding Adams.
Indications that Cuomo was gearing up for a run intensified in recent days. Just last week, supporters of Cuomo established a super PAC named “Fix the City,” as indicated by data from the State Board of Elections.
