Happy New Month, and welcome to October. Healing often isn’t merely about improvement, but rather about shedding everything that doesn’t represent your true self—every expectation and belief—and emerging as your authentic self. Awareness serves as the initial stage of recovery. There is an intrinsic beauty in scars of every kind. A scar signifies that the […]
The national government has declared the cancellation of the procession that was originally planned to commemorate the nation’s 65th independence anniversary on Oct 1. Segun Imohiosen, the information and public relations director in the office of the secretary of the federation (OSGF), shared this update in a statement issued on Monday. The national government expressed regret for the disruption caused by this cancellation. “The cancellation does not in any way diminish the importance of this significant anniversary, and the government is steadfast in its commitment to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with honor and zeal,” the statement asserts “Therefore, all other events scheduled for the Independence Anniversary will proceed as planned. “The National Government values the understanding, support, and cooperation of all Nigerians, the diplomatic corps, and invited guests, and encourages Nigerians to back the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in the endeavor to make Nigeria an even greater nation.” The procession and presidential address were set to occur on Wednesday to celebrate the country’s liberation from colonial rule in 1960. Previously, the national government had designated Wednesday as a public holiday in honor of the independence day celebration.
President Tinubu has sanctioned a reform that connects the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilization process to the National Policy for the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD). By citing Sections 2(4)(4) and 16(1) (C) of the NYSC Act, Tinubu mandated that no graduate—regardless of whether they attended a Nigerian or overseas institution— will be mobilized for or exempted from NYSC will be mobilized for or exempted from NYSC without evidence of adherence to the NERD policy. This directive, communicated via a circular from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, will come into force on October 6. Under the NERD framework, students must submit academicoutputs, such as theses and project reports, to support a national initiative aimed at combating certificate fraud and safeguarding Nigeria’s intellectual resources. As per Section 6.1.23 of the policy, this requirement functions as an independent quality assurance mechanism and verification of academic enrollment. Earlier in March 2025, during the announcement of the NERD Declaration of Effectiveness, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, stated that following the declaration, “the enforced conditions for compulsory submission of academic outputs as detailed in Sections 2.3, 4.3(1), and 7.6.11(c), among others, of the sanctioned National Policy for the NERD Programme will become mandatory provisions in Nigeria.” Emphasizing the significance of the directive, NERD spokesperson Haula Galadima elaborated that each student submission will include the complete names of the student, supervisor, co-supervisor (when applicable), and Head of Department, alongside the sponsoring institution and department. Galadima remarked, “Apart from the obligation to verify for authenticity as a national flagship, the NERD digitization initiative has a clear aim – to elevate the standards of academic content, output, and presentation across the country. “One approach NERD plans to achieve this goal, based on its mission, is to enhance the supervision processes in the nation’s higher education institutions without directly intervening in those processes. “If our distinguished scholars are conscious that their names will be associated with those of the students they oversee on a globally accessible digital platform, there is a high chance that each lecturer would raise their standards.
Nigerian entrepreneur, Femi Otedola, has initiated legal proceedings against Umar Sani, a former aide to Vice President Namadi Sambo. Otedola has lodged a ₦1 billion libel claim against Sani due to his recent remarks linking Otedola to the fuel subsidy fraud that occurred during the Goodluck Jonathan administration. Sani has accused that over ₦2 trillion was misappropriated through dubious subsidy claims in that administration. He asserted that “Otedola himself benefited greatly during that period.” In a statement issued late Sunday night, Otedola referred to Sani’s accusations as “malicious falsehoods.” Reflecting on his role in unveiling the subsidy fraud, Otedola pointed out that he was the first to notify former President Goodluck Jonathan and then Senate President Bukola Saraki about the scam, questioning how he could be implicated in profiting from a fraud he exposed. Rejecting Sani’s attempts to associate him with the subsidy controversy, Otedola affirmed that his company, Zenon Petroleum, never engaged in petrol trading and thus could not have tapped into the subsidy funds. He announced his intention to sue the former presidential aide for the alleged defamatory statements, maintaining thathe would not permit anyone to jeopardize his hard-earned reputation. He stated, “Due to these deliberate falsehoods and baseless claims, I have instructed my attorneys to initiate a ₦1 billion libel suit against Umar Sani . It is crucial for people to understand that reputations are too valuable to be manipulated for cheap propaganda and to deter future mischief- makers , I will pursue this to the fullest extent. Furthermore, the businessman urged President Bola Tinubu to disclose the complete report of the Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede panel established during the Jonathan administration to investigate the significant petrol subsidy fraud. According to him, Nigerians have a right to be informed about the individuals who siphoned funds through the fraud committed under the Petroleum Subsidy Fund scheme. “I urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release the entire Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede report on subsidy fraud, as it is vital for Nigerians to uncover the reality. It is documented that the Presidency at the time requested the late Economic and Financial crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde, to cease the investigation. The report should be made public to reveal the true perpetrators of the subsidy theft,” Otedola stated. Otedola concluded, “My attention has been drawn to a deceitful and malicious article penned by one Umar Sani, a former Special Adviser (Media) to former Vice President Namadi Sambo, attempting to distort facts and tarnish my name withaccusations of involvement in the subsidy fraud. “His insinuations are untrue, unfounded, and a disgraceful […]
