The government of Lagos State has enacted legislation regarding the transplantation of human organs and tissues.
During a press conference at the Ministry of Justice in Alausa, Ikeja, the state’s capital, Lawal Pedro, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, announced that this law aims to address the issue of illegal organ harvesting within the state.
Pedro stated: “These legislative measures signify more than mere accomplishments; they embody our unwavering dedication to establishing Lagos as a beacon of progress, justice, and opportunity in Nigeria.
“Our administration has consistently prioritized the immediate requirements of our citizens, safeguarding their rights, and ensuring their health, safety, and overall prosperity.”
He further emphasized that the Human Organ Harvesting and Tissue Transplantation Law is designed to combat illicit organ trade and unethical medical practices.
“This legislation seeks to shield individuals from exploitation and guarantees that medical procedures adhere to the utmost ethical standards.
“Those found guilty may face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison or a penalty of up to N10 million.”
