Niger Delta Youth Parliament Speaker Rejects Protest Over Pipeline Contract Dispute

Niger Delta Youth Parliament Speaker Ifon Daniel Samuel denies involvement in planned protests over pipeline contracts, urges youths to stay calm.

Niger Delta Youth Leader Distances Himself From Planned Protest

The Speaker of the Niger Delta Youth Parliament, Ifon Daniel Samuel, has publicly rejected any involvement in a proposed protest linked to alleged exclusion in a major pipeline surveillance contract.

He clarified that his name was wrongly used in connection with the planned demonstrations, urging youths across the region to remain calm and avoid misinformation.

Denies Authorising Protest Statement

In an official statement released on Thursday, Ifon stated that he neither approved nor participated in drafting the protest notice reportedly circulating online.

“I did not authorise, endorse, or consent to that statement in any form,” he said.

He further explained that his name was added as a signatory without his knowledge, distancing himself completely from the planned action.

Planned Demonstrations Spark Concern

The disputed notice had called for protests in key cities, including:

  • Uyo
  • Warri
  • Port Harcourt
  • Abuja

The protests were reportedly scheduled for April 20, 2026, and linked to claims of marginalisation in a multi-billion naira pipeline surveillance contract awarded to Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited.

Call for Responsible and Transparent Engagement

While acknowledging that peaceful protest is a constitutional right, Ifon stressed that such actions must be based on verified information and proper consultation.

According to him, the situation lacked transparency and due process, making the planned protest unjustified.

Push for Inclusive Opportunities in the Niger Delta

The Speaker emphasized the need for broader inclusion of Niger Delta youths in major infrastructure and oil-related projects.

He noted that expanding access to such opportunities could:

  • Reduce unemployment
  • Improve regional stability
  • Address long-standing concerns about marginalisation

Cautions Against Disrupting Existing Pipeline Arrangements

Despite concerns raised by some groups, Ifon warned against attempts to disrupt the current pipeline surveillance framework.

He highlighted that the existing arrangement is already benefiting many individuals and contributing to measurable progress in the region.

Shift Focus to Economic Ownership

In a notable statement, he encouraged Niger Delta youths and stakeholders to shift their focus from pipeline protection contracts to securing ownership stakes in oil resources.

He argued that this approach would bring more sustainable economic benefits to the region.

Final Message to Niger Delta Youths

Ifon concluded by urging young people to remain law-abiding and avoid being manipulated into actions that could destabilize the region.

He emphasized the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and constructive engagement as the path toward lasting peace and development in the Niger Delta.

The controversy surrounding the proposed protest highlights ongoing tensions over resource control and inclusion in the Niger Delta. However, leaders like Ifon Daniel Samuel are calling for calm, transparency, and long-term solutions rather than confrontation.
