The NNPC Foundation has commissioned and handed over a modern 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in a major move aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
The intervention is part of the foundation’s ongoing efforts to improve access to quality healthcare and upgrade medical infrastructure across the country.
The newly installed MRI facility is expected to serve millions of residents across the South-East region, including Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia and Ebonyi states, as well as neighbouring Delta State.
State-of-the-Art MRI Facility Installed
The project involved the complete delivery, installation and testing of the advanced 1.5 Tesla MRI machine alongside several supporting facilities required for efficient operation.
Additional infrastructure installed includes:
- RF shielding systems
- Chillers
- Backup UPS systems
- Electrical installations
- Specialized imaging accessories
- Ventilation systems
- CCTV and oxygen monitoring systems
- Intercom communication facilities
- Patient comfort technologies
The comprehensive setup is designed to ensure accurate diagnostic imaging and uninterrupted operation of the medical equipment.
Patients to Benefit from Faster Diagnosis
Before the intervention, many patients seeking MRI diagnostic services reportedly faced long waiting periods, expensive medical costs and stressful travel to distant imaging centres.
The new facility is expected to improve access to advanced medical diagnosis, reduce delays in treatment and provide more affordable healthcare services within the region.
Medical experts say access to MRI technology is essential for detecting and managing conditions involving the brain, spine, joints and internal organs.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony held at the Igwe Orizu ICT Centre at the permanent site of NAUTH in Anambra State, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the intervention as a strategic investment in healthcare and national development.
Represented by the Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, Emmanuella Arukwe, the GCEO stated that access to quality healthcare remains critical to human dignity, economic growth and improved living standards.
According to him, the MRI installation reflects the company’s commitment to building sustainable systems and impactful institutions across Nigeria.
Anambra Government Commends NNPC Foundation
Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, represented by the Commissioner for Health, Afam Obidike, praised the initiative and noted that the MRI facility would improve accurate diagnosis and treatment for patients in the South-East.
The state government also commended the NNPC Foundation for supporting healthcare development and improving access to modern medical services.

The Executive Vice President of Business Services at NNPC Ltd., Sophia Mbakwe, represented by Chief Supply Chain Officer Isokariari Telema, reiterated the organisation’s commitment to impactful social investments across Nigeria.

NAUTH Promises Proper Utilisation of MRI Facility
The Chief Medical Director of NAUTH, Joseph Ugboaja, applauded NNPC Ltd. for recognising the importance of healthcare in national development.
He assured the foundation that the hospital would effectively utilise and maintain the MRI facility for the benefit of patients and the wider public.
