Whatsapp To Replace Phone Numbers With Username

WhatsApp has declared its intention to substitute phone numbers with usernames. As per sources, WhatsApp is currently trialing an innovative feature that could enable users to connect without disclosing their phone numbers.

The Meta-owned service is developing a username framework—akin to what is available on Instagram, Telegram, and X—potentially becoming one of the most significant privacy enhancements the app has seen. The feature, which is presently going through beta testing, will allow users to establish distinct usernames for chatting and joining groups without having to share their numbers.

This initiative seeks to bolster privacy, especially in sizable community forums and business communications where offering personal contacts may seem intrusive.Leaked images indicate a new “Username” feature within user profiles, allowing individuals to select personalized handles and decide whether to conceal their phone numbers.

Nevertheless, specialists caution that this upgrade might bring about challenges, such as username theft and impersonation. To address these concerns, WhatsApp is reportedly planning to introduce verification and security protocols alongside the new system.

Although still under development, the username feature might transform how more than two billion users interact on WhatsApp—shifting the emphasis from numbers to names.
