In a stunning development regarding the political turmoil in Rivers State, President Bola Tinubu has successfully facilitated a peace agreement that will allow Governor Siminalayi Fubara to maintain his position — provided that he refrains from running for a second term in 2027.
The pact was formalized during a private meeting at the Presidential Villa on Thursday evening. Among those in attendance were Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike; Governor Fubara; the suspended Speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule; and various legislators affiliated with both camps.
According to sources within the presidency, the accord is part of a larger strategy to restore political harmony and democratic integrity in the state following months of discord between Fubara and his predecessor-turned-foe, Wike.

Insiders disclosed that Fubara has consented to fulfill his current four-year term but will not pursue reelection in the 2027 gubernatorial contest — a notable concession aimed at alleviating political tensions. In exchange, Wike is believed to have secured the authority to appoint all local government chairpersons across the 23 LGAs of the state, enhancing his sway over Rivers politics.
Although the agreement has yet to be publicly disclosed, it signifies a pivotal moment in the extended clash that has imperiled governance in one of Nigeria’s most politically pivotal states.
