Imprisoned artist R. Kelly has implored President Donald Trump for clemency. In an urgent petition analyzed by Entertainment Weekly, the singer of “I Believe I Can Fly,” whose real name is Robert Kelly, seeks to be transitioned to home confinement due to concerns for his safety in jail.
The 58-year-old claims that prison authorities have plotted to orchestrate his demise at the hands of another inmate. Kelly’s legal representatives are currently in negotiations with Trump’s Pardon Czar, Alice Marie Johnson, who recently facilitated the release of reality television stars Todd and Julie Chrisley from federal custody.
Kelly’s legal team is optimistic about his imminent release from incarceration. Ms. Johnson is said to enjoy R. Kelly’s musical contributions.
“We are actively engaging in dialogue with individuals connected to President Trump. These conversations have progressed and intensified since we submitted our application,” Kelly’s attorney Beau B. Brindley shared with PEOPLE. “We believe President Trump is the only individual with the fortitude to assist us. Our urgency escalates daily.”
Kelly is currently serving a three-decade sentence after being convicted on federal counts, including racketeering and sexual trafficking.
Brindley initiated the urgent petition following claims made by inmate Mikeal Glenn Stine, who alleged he was solicited to eliminate Kelly by three senior officials from the Bureau of Prisons.
Stine asserts he is a longstanding associate of the Aryan Brotherhood, stating that his position as commissioner bestowed upon him the authority to command beatings, stabbings, and executions executed by other gang affiliates.
