As reported by Sahara Reporters, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has targeted Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) once more, cautioning that her actions may jeopardize women’s prospects for achieving high political offices in Nigeria.
During a Senate plenary session on Thursday, Akpabio accused Akpoti-Uduaghan of mishandling a sensitive issue, claiming she has taken it beyond the legislative assembly and the judicial system. His comments hinted at worries regarding the wider effects of her behavior on how female politicians are perceived.
“I have four daughters, and I implore politicians to continue providing them and other women with opportunities. The faults of one individual should not lead to the collective punishment of others,” Akpabio remarked, stressing the importance of distinguishing personal actions from group representation.
“I know that after leaving the chamber, she went to Brekete Radio and Arise Television to misrepresent the facts. She has now taken the issue outside, trying to embarrass Nigeria in front of the global community by sharing a misleading narrative at the IPU UN event,” Akpabio asserted.
The situation surrounding Akpoti-Uduaghan has ignited discussions about gender representation in Nigerian politics, with some interpreting Akpabio’s remarks as an indirect attempt to delegitimize her, while others perceive them as a call for accountable leadership.
